Explanation

Find the area of ABCD and EFGH:

Area = \(l \times w\)
Area of ABCD = \(3x \times 2x = 6x^2\)
Area of EFGH = \(x \times y = xy\)

The area of the shaded region is the area of ABCD minus the area of EFGH:

Area of ABCD = \(6x^2\)
Area of EFGH = \(xy\)

Area of the shaded region = \(6x^2 - xy\)

Hence option D is correct.

Shaded area = (area of rectangle ABCD) - (area of rectangle EFGH)

Area of rectangle = (base)(height)

We get: Shaded area = (3x)(2x) - (x)(y)
Simplify: Shaded area = 6x² - xy

Answer: D
