Explanation

Find the area of ABCD and EFGH:

Area = $$l \times w$$
Area of ABCD = $$3x \times 2x = 6x^2$$
Area of EFGH = $$x \times y = xy$$

The area of the shaded region is the area of ABCD minus the area of EFGH:

Area of ABCD = $$6x^2$$
Area of EFGH = $$xy$$

Area of the shaded region = $$6x^2 - xy$$

Hence option D is correct.
