I'd go with d. He could have travelled any distance at any speeds.

I think the answer should be since to achieve average of 36mph, the distance with 40mph would far outweigh that of 30mph.

same example would to have an average of 60 grade the number of people who score 70 should be more than that of 50!

in any case the answer should be B, since av R is 36

PLEASE CHANGE THE OA!
OA of this question is B. Here's how:

Average Speed = Total Distance/Total Time
36 = (Distance of First part + Distance of Second part)/(Time for first part + time for second)
36 = (30t1 + 40t2)/(t1 + t2)
36(t1 + t2) = 30t1 + 40t2
36t1 + 36t2 = 30t1 + 40t2
6t1 = 4t2
t2 = 1.5 t1

Which means, t2 is greater than t1.

As both Speed and Time of second part is greater than that of first part of the trip, thus, QUANTITY B IS GREATER
