the taxi charges 0.85 for the first 1/2 mile and 0.25 for each additional 1/2 miles
if the taxi charges 0.25 for each additional 1/2 miles than it must be that the taxi charges 0.5 for each additional 1 mile
so we have 0.85 +0.5X = 8.85 solving for x we get,
x = 16; this is the additional miles driven by the taxi above the first 0.5 mile
Therefore total miles driven by taxi = 16.5 miles
(A)

0.85$ for 1st mile

Total 8.85$
So distance travelled with next 8$ is to be calculated.

0.5$ per mile is the cost from second mile.

0.5$ for 2nd mile and 1 $ for 2 miles.

For 8 $, taxi will be able to travel 16 miles after the first mile.

16+1 = 17 miles.

Value of B is 16 which is less than A.

So answer is A
