Solution

Instead to start calculation right away, reflect on this: the greatest number of pens we can buy is as many as for $2

\(2*11=22\)\(+\) one pe for \($3\) we have a total of \($25\) with which we can buy 12 pens

Answer is \(D\)

The $2 pens are cheaper, so see if we can maximize the number of $2 pens we can buy.
If we buy 12 $2 pens, we will spend $24
So, EITHER the correct answer is D (12) OR it's possible to by even more than 12 pens.

HOWEVER, when we check the answer choices, we see that there's only one answer choice bigger than 12, and that answer choices is 20
Since there no ways to buy 20 pens for $25, the correct answer must be D

Cheers,
Brent
