1. Illustrate - The Video Dictionary

This application is free, and is available through various platforms, including the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and soon, the Windows Phone Store.

The app, which is intended to help students studying for the verbal/English sections of the GRE, includes precise and clearly animated videos with actual conversations to explain the meaning, context and usage of English words. It also includes 5,000+ words covered on the test, as well as a “Word of the day” and “Question of the day” feature.

This easy-to-use app not only helps you to understand the meaning of words, but it also shows you new words whose meanings may be of significant importance to your studying.

2. Pocket GRE Math

This free application, available on Google play, contains a collection of 550+ quantitative aptitude questions and word problems to help you prepare for the math section of the GRE.

The app is categorized into 19 different topics and includes important, must-know formulas for each topic. The questions are of varying levels of difficulty, and solutions are also offered, in detail, to aid students further.

A scratch pad is featured on the app as well, to serve as a way to work out problems.

3. IntelliVocab for GRE and GMAT

Built by students at MIT, this free app boasts its ability to completely control the learning environment, so that you don’t have to deal with the stress of planning your learning approach. All you have to do is interact with the app.

The more you practice its problems, the more the app learns about you, figures out words that are difficult for you, and formulates questions accordingly.

The app offers 290+ words to learn, and a practice session, with words that are customized based on your level of expertise, and your comfort level with the words.

The app also profiles users in its categorization of the “Expert level,” which is determined based on interactions with the words, and the “Commitment level,” which is determined based on the iPhone App/AI engine.

4. PrepGame

This free app, which covers standardized tests such as the GMAT, GRE, SAT and ACT, uses a unique strategy to draw the student in: turning test preparation into a fun game.

While attaining the maximum number of stars, unlocking new levels and beating high scores, you are mastering key tested concepts of the above mentioned standardized tests under time pressure.

The game contains six math topics: properties of integers, percents, probability and counting, absolute value, coordinate geometry and the Venn diagram.
